Unlike other vegetable oils, tung oil is not suitable for nutrition. It is mainly used for the production of varnish, partly also for the production of soap and linoleum, as a lubricating oil and as a binder in painting.
Raw wood turns a yellowish-golden color after tung oil treatment. Tung oil polymerizes and oxidizes similarly to linseed oil, but dries faster and forms a resinous, hard, matte surface. In painting, there is a high risk of embrittlement or cracking if tung oil is used alone. Therefore, it is usually used in a mixture with linseed oil varnish. When added to linseed oil varnish by up to 20 %, it accelerates drying and reduces swelling caused by water. When mixed with linseed oil, particularly good durability and weather resistance is achieved. Added in small quantities to the final coat of linseed oil paints without solvents, it increases their gloss and abrasion resistance. |
