Scraper cutters offer a wide range of graphic possibilities thanks to their specific shapes and points, which can be adapted to different artistic needs. For example, comb-shaped dots allow you to quickly draw parallel lines, ideal for rendering textures such as hair or grass, while curved dots make it easier to precisely eliminate large white areas to create strong contrasts.

‘Effect’ scratch cards such as holographic, rainbow, gold and copper coloured cards are used to enrich creations by adding unique visual dimensions. These special papers reveal vibrant motifs or colours when the top layer is scratched off, creating spectacular effects not possible with traditional scratch cards.

Once you have scratched your card, you can add extra colour with coloured pencils, markers or ink to highlight certain areas or add personal touches.

To maintain the finesse of your work, carefully remove any residue from the scraped layer with a soft cloth, being careful not to alter the details already created. Wash your hands to avoid fingerprints on the smooth black surface of your project! To avoid scratches, protect the areas where you are not working with tracing paper.

To correct a scratching error, we recommend using a permanent black felt-tip pen with a fine tip for a precise, clean line.

White pastel pencils allow you to make visible, erasable sketches on the scratch card, making it easier to draw precisely without damaging the black surface. It is preferable to graphite pencils, which can leave grey marks.

Paint the coloured surface evenly with the black paint. If necessary, apply two coats to cover the underlying colours. Allow to dry completely between coats.

Draw the basic lines with a felt-tip pen or a fine brush and black ink.

Cover your entire sheet of paper with bright coloured oil pastels

Using tools, scrape away the black layer you just applied to reveal the underlying white. Then start scraping away the remaining white areas to create delicate shadows.

Finish the task by adding a few more shadow areas and scraping away the light areas.

The scratchboard technique is a fascinating artistic method that combines simplicity and expressiveness. It consists of a rigid base (cardboard or paper) covered with a layer of white, itself coated with a top layer of black India ink. By scratching the black surface with special tools, the underlying white is revealed to create contrasting designs. This technique visually resembles engraving, but is more accessible thanks to the fineness of the layer to be scratched.
